Rods - Reels - Lures - Jigs and Line

General Information

The Spinning Rods:    

For the Cozumel and Cancun flats the most recommended spinning rods are from 6’ to 6'.5" or 7’ ugly stick rods manufatured by by Shimano, Shakespeare and Daiwa (light or medium action) with their matching reels for saltwater fishing to be used with 6, 8, 10 and 12 pound test line.

The Spinning Reels:     

The saltwater spinning reels we normally use are the gold Penn reel # 4300 SSalong with the gold Penn reel # 4400 SS. We also use the Shimano reel # 2000 FA Sedona, the Shimano reel # 2000 Solstace and the Quantum reel Iron 1- R- 4 - F. These reels have an ultra light action gear, so these are the ones we recommend.

The Fishing Line: 

We strongly recommend our anglers to bring clear monofilament line for   saltwater fishing #6, #8, #10 and #12 pound test line. The most recommended companies are: Andy, Maxima, Berkley, Jinkai, Triple Tail, Tri-Line, etc. We don’t recommend you to bring any heavier line other than the one these. Also, make sure to bring some coils of fluorocarbon line #12, #15, #25 and #40, for shock tippets.

 The Jigs:   

The best suggested jigs for the bonefish and permit are the flat leaded head called Millies and Phillips Wiggle jigs. The total weight of the jig should not exceed from 3/8 to ¼ oz maximum. Best colors are: regular pink, hot pink, yellow, white, sand, green, blue & white, brown, and chartreuse (regular and combo). You can order these @ : www.anglers-ammo.com

 The Lures:

All lures Must Be Floaters. Otherwise they are not good at all as the water is shallow. Also, they should not exceed from 3 to 4 inches in length. All lures must have stainless steel hooks for saltwater fishing. Best suggested lures are all floating Mirro-Lures in different and combined colors. Your lure selection should also include regular and split tail floating Rapalas, Heddons, Devil Horses, Zara Spooks, Hula Poppers, etc. Also, don’t forget to bring the world famous tube jig for the barracudas.



Very important: Every ones needs excellent polarized sunglasses for seeing fish (without excellent eyewear you are totally wasting your time), a convenient hat, plenty of sun block screen (#50 +), bug spray, light clothing and don’t forget your camera.
